An estate sale is a whole-house sale, usually run over two or three days. Everything from furniture and kitchenware to tools, art and collectibles is priced and sold on site. Across metro Atlanta, estate sales happen nearly every weekend, from Buckhead and East Cobb to Decatur, Gwinnett and North Fulton. They follow downsizing, moves, divorces and the death of a family member. This guide brings together everything we've written on hiring a company, running your own sale and shopping sales, so you can find the right page fast.
Estate sale, garage sale or auction?
- Estate sale: most of the home's contents, priced and tagged, sold inside the house. Often run by a company for a commission.
- Garage or yard sale: a few tables of extras in the driveway, usually one day and usually run by the household.
- Auction: items go to the highest bidder, in person or online. In Georgia, auctions must be run by an auctioneer licensed through the Georgia Auctioneers Commission.
